Security Risk Assessment Upington
Imagine this: over 70% of physical security breaches in South Africa can be prevented by closing a single overlooked gap! Welcome to a fresh perspective on crime prevention, a method as dynamic and adaptable as the challenges we face today. Over the years, Alwinco has developed a unique approach to crime and security that distinguishes itself from conventional methods. Our strategy is not merely a checklist but a dynamic approach aimed at outwitting criminal behavior. At the core of our method lies a simple yet powerful concept: OPPORTUNITY. This element plays a pivotal role in both the occurrence of crime and its prevention.
We recently conducted an independent security risk assessment for a hospital in Johannesburg, identifying vulnerabilities that standard assessments often fail to address. This process allows us to recommend practical measures that enhance the overall safety and security of the facility.
If you would like to learn more about our assessments or have specific topics you would like us to cover, please email your suggestions to andre@alwinco.co.za. We will create and publish articles on our website tailored to your interests.
Crime isn’t a static number on a report; it’s a shape-shifter.
It adapts and evolves with society, much like a virus finding new ways to survive. Recognizing this fluidity allows us to develop strategies that are not only smarter but also more flexible. In other words, our crime prevention plans must be as clever and varied as the criminal mind itself!
The Crime Triangle

Think of crime as a fire that needs three things to ignite:
Desire
Ability
Opportunity
Each element is directly linked to the criminal. Remove even one, and the spark is snuffed out.
To illustrate, picture an iceberg. The visible tip is small compared to the massive, hidden base lurking beneath the water. Much like the infamous Titanic, many overlook the vast danger lying beneath the surface. While we might focus on what we can’t easily change—the criminal’s desire or ability—the hidden part, OPPORTUNITY, is where real vulnerability lies.
We often get sidetracked by elements beyond our control. A criminal’s desire stems from deeply personal factors, upbringing, past experiences, and personal beliefs that we simply cannot alter. Their ability, whether physical or mental, is also not something we can directly diminish, except by making access harder. Think higher walls, reinforced bars, or sophisticated security systems that discourage criminals by forcing them to look elsewhere. But here’s the key: Opportunity is something we can control. It encompasses predictable schedules, unsecured areas, and poorly managed security systems—any opening that allows a criminal to act. Eliminating these opportunities is a significant step towards effective crime prevention.
Understanding Risk
RISK emerges where THREAT and OPPORTUNITY meet. Picture it this way: a criminal’s desire (D) plus their ability (A) creates a threat (T). This threat is then magnified by the available opportunity (O), especially when security awareness (-Aw) is lacking. The equation is simple yet powerful:
Risk = (Desire + Ability) x Opportunity, reduced by Security Awareness and Control
This formula underscores a vital point: effective risk management hinges on robust, proactive control measures and a culture of security awareness among management, security teams, and employees alike.
Key Factors in Assessing Risk
Drawing from my years of experience in the field, I’ve identified several critical risk factors:
Opportunistic Behavior: Many crimes are spontaneous, carried out by individuals, often local youths who exploit any available opportunity.
Organized Crime: Not all criminals act on impulse. Some meticulously plan their actions, gathering intel from every available source, from administrative staff to contractors.
The Right Attitude: As proactive crime fighters, our mindset must be stronger than that of the criminal. This begins with a robust security system and a well-prepared team.Comprehensive Information: Effective prevention starts with gathering and analyzing relevant data.
Positional Awareness: Understanding the ‘when’ and ‘where’ of potential crimes is essential.
Identifying Opportunities: We must pinpoint every potential opening that could be exploited and act to close it.
The ‘Night Factor’: Security dynamics change at night. A shift in mindset and opportunity occurs, which many overlook.
Unchangeable Desire: We cannot influence a criminal’s internal drive, but we can and must obstruct their opportunity to act.
In conclusion,
Effective physical security isn’t about following a disconnected set of rules. It reflects the collective attitude and awareness of everyone involved, from the criminal to management, security providers, and even the wider public. By cultivating a vigilant environment where every suspicious behavior is reported and every gap in security is addressed, we can prevent crimes before they even occur. Let’s work together to remove the opportunities that allow crime to thrive, one smart, proactive step at a time!
