Dead is Too Late: Why Waiting Until It’s Too Late Is a Dangerous Gamble

30% of criminals have already committed murder, and they’re likely to do it again. Let that sink in for a moment. Now, imagine your business or home is the next target. The reality is chilling: these offenders often don’t think like you or me. Logic doesn’t guide their actions. Anger, desperation, delusion, and even mind-altering substances shape their decisions. This combination makes them dangerously unpredictable. Security isn’t just about walls and alarms; it’s about understanding who you’re up against and being ready before the threat even reaches your door.

# Security Risk Assessments

We recently carried out an independent security risk assessment for a residential estate in George, uncovering risks that are frequently missed in conventional assessments. This enables us to recommend practical measures that strengthen the overall safety and security of the community.

If you would like to learn more about our assessments or have specific topics you would like us to cover, please email your suggestions to andre@alwinco.co.za. We will develop and publish articles on our website tailored to your interests.

Waiting for a crime to happen before reacting is a recipe for disaster.

Consider this: a criminal, in full view of a CCTV camera, waves at it before proceeding to kill his victim. That’s not an isolated incident; it’s a stark reminder that traditional security methods aren’t always enough. You need more than just cameras. You need a plan, awareness, and the right tools to act before it’s too late. In this post, we’re going to dive deep into how independent security risk assessments can give you the upper hand by providing insight, strategy, and prevention tactics that put you in control.

Dead is too late

“If you’ve already killed one person, what difference will another twenty make?”
These chilling words came from a hardened criminal when asked during an interview why offenders kill at crime scenes. It’s shocking and unsettling, but even more so when you consider that this was his second response. His first answer was simply, “Because we can.” A shocking statistic reveals that 30% of criminals have already committed murder and are likely to do so again, as highlighted by the opening quote.

It’s crucial to understand that these individuals often do not think logically.

They may be mentally imbalanced or unstable or driven purely by anger and hatred. In some cases, the misuse of drugs or alcohol can impair their judgment, making them bolder and less hesitant when committing their crimes. There have even been instances where criminals, under the influence of witch doctors’ medicine, believe they are invincible or invisible, driven by a dangerous delusion. All of the factors mentioned above will ultimately impact their thought processes and behavior. This combination makes these individuals highly unpredictable and, therefore, extremely dangerous.

Traditional security methods will not necessarily deter these types of criminals.

In one case, a criminal saw the CCTV camera, waved at it, and then proceeded to attack and kill his victim, all while the incident was being recorded. As ordinary citizens, we often cannot fathom the idea that we might be capable of committing such a heinous crime against another person. However, the truth is that not everyone shares the same characteristics. Desperation or delusion can drive people to act in extreme ways.

The only way to prevent these types of crimes is to have the necessary knowledge and control over your security.

If you are alerted to an intruder as soon as they attempt to breach your perimeter, you will have more time to stop them. Once they are already inside, it’s too late. An independent security risk assessment gives you the power and tools necessary to prevent such incidents from occurring, protecting you, your loved ones, and your employees from becoming another statistic. The primary goal of the security risk assessment is to prevent crime before it happens and to raise security awareness. It encourages open discussion so that a plan or response can be formulated in case you ever find yourself facing such a situation.
Prevention is better than cure, and if you’re dead, it’s undoubtedly too late.
